James D. Hirst, 75, of Apalachin, passed away on Saturday, January 1st, 2022. He was predeceased by his parents, James H. and Janet Hirst, and Robert and Iva Ayers. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Penny Ayers Hirst; their children Sheri (Steven) Hirst Johnson, Janet (Michael) Hirst Springfield, and James R. Hirst; and their grandchildren Allison and Keller Springfield; Cameron, Tiffany, and Patrick Johnson; and Wyatt Hirst. He also had several sisters and brothers (predeceased by Shirley, Sarah, Sue, Darla & Robert, Beverly, Robert & Wanda and survived by Barbara, Linda, Robin, Doug, Harlan, Sharon & Bob, Pam & Randy, and Dixie). He had several nieces and nephews as well as many friends that he considered family.
Jim graduated from Union Endicott High School in 1965, served in the US Army, and retired after 40 years from the Town of Union, where he got his start as a teenager running the merry-go-round for many summers at West Endicott Park. He was still recognized and remembered for these fun times even now. He loved attending school, sporting, and music events over the years of his children and grandchildren, and especially loved road trips with his wife to discover new places and restaurants. He could often be found sitting on his porch or talking with and waving to his neighbors passing by. Jim was ready with a helping hand anytime, anywhere his friends or family needed something. He was well loved and respected by so many and will be sadly missed.
Private funeral services will be held at the family’s convenience and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later time. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Jim Hirst Memorial Scholarship Fund in support of trades, c/o Pucedo Funeral Home 1905 Watson Blvd. Endicott, NY 13760.
